The US Open hasn’t really been on our radar this summer.Excusing Wimbledon of course, it’s difficult to find the time amidst our hectic schedule of cake-baking and pie-making to keep up-to-date with events on-court. That all changed this morning though, as we flicked through our morning copy of The Tea Times (distributed exclusively to T&S staff members) and stumbled across an interview with Maria Sharapova. We read with a swelling sense of affection as our new favorite tennis belle declared her love for tea and cake. “I’m an afternoon tea type of girl,” she says “I come from a Russian background where we love our teas. So between lunch and dinner after training I come home and I love a nice cup of tea with jam in it, as we drink it there. Black English Breakfast with raspberry jam is my favorite.” She goes on to the topic of cake, the importance of which in T&S’s eyes is unrivaled: “I have a very big sweet tooth and I love treating myself to something that I wouldn’t necessarily eat during the tournament such as a nice-sized cake.” Maria for the championship!
STOP PRESS: Nicky has just announced Maria Sharapova can have as much tea and cake as she can eat and drink, free of charge, if she wins. Somebody please update her ASAP; this could be the icing on her game (to muddle a pun…)!
LATE ADDITION: Nicky confirms that Maria can even stir jam into her tea if she so wishes.
