While perusing the World Wide Tea Web, we came across this interesting musical offering:
“Tea Life” by Silas B. Ritchie and Brian Tairaku Ritchie is a whole album “bound together by the thread of tea drinking“. This astounding musical discovery got our tea sense well and truly tingling and we began to delve deeper into the world of songs to sip your cup of brew to. Before long, we found this interesting little ditty:
We stopped ourselves here, before we lost a whole day, a week, or possibly longer down the rabbit hole of caffeinated, milky and sometimes sugary compositions. But while these may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it got us thinking – what are the best songs to drink tea to? We would really love your suggestions in the comments section below. And who knows, maybe this will lead to the first “Tea & Sympathy” LP…
Here are a couple of our favorites to get the ball rolling:
1. Doris Day – Tea for Two
Written for the 1925 Broadway musical “No, No Nanette!”, ‘Tea for Two’ is a musical declaration from a young man to his love of ‘how happy we could be’ living together, raising a family and sipping tea. We couldn’t agree more! We choose this Doris Day version from the 1950 film of the same name – we do love a bit of Doris, and good on her for making the song HER own. As a slightly tenuous link, this film features in the fabulously eery 1975 documentary ‘Grey Gardens‘, set out on Long Island, which of course is in New York, and therefore not too far from Tea & Sympathy….
2. Sting – Englishman in New York
Ahh, what a classic, and this time, the link is far from tenuous. From the opening line of “I don’t drink coffee, I take tea, my dear”, to the call to “See me walking down Fifth Avenue, a cane here at my side”, to the weird but wonderful refrain of “I’m an alien, I’m a legal alien”, this is truly a Tea & Sympathy classic. We’d be surprised if it didn’t hold a special place in the hearts of some of our expat customers.
So now it’s your turn, and we would really appreciated any suggestions you have. Please fire away – do you have a favorite song to drink tea to??
